Overview of Washington Trust Bank
Washington Trust Bank is one of the largest banks in the United States and also one of the oldest. The bank began operations in 1902 and today has assets of $11 billion which places it firmly in the 90th percentile of banks in the United States. The bank’s primary office is located in the city of Spokane in the state of Washington. Based on FDIC data, Washington Trust Bank had the 9th largest share of deposits in the state of Washington, representing 3.3% of deposits in the market.
Of the banks headquartered within the state, Washington Trust Bank is the third largest, and it is right behind Columbia State Bank and Banner Bank, in terms of deposits. Washington Trust Bank operates entirely domestically and has 42 offices and as of this writing, the bank employs a total of 1,084 people.
Products and Services
The bank has an extensive offering of both products and services for consumers and businesses. Some of its offerings include the following:
- Checking Accounts – the main checking account offered by Washington Trust Bank is its Simplicity Checking account. To open the account you need to have $50 or more deposited, but beyond this there is no minimum balance required. The bank charges a $3 monthly base fee which is waived if you have monthly recurring direct deposits set up OR receive electronic statements.
- Savings Accounts – the main savings account offered by the bank is its Simplicity Savings account which is similar to its checking account equivalent. This account requires $50 or more to open. Account holders also have to maintain a balance of $300 or more each day, or they will get charged a $3 monthly service charge. In addition, account holders can deposit up to 75 items per statement cycle for free; beyond this amount there is a $0.20 per item fee. Currently, the bank offers a 0.05% APY on its savings accounts, which while above most of the top 5 banks, is below the national average of 0.10%.
- Credit Cards – the bank offers Visa Signature and Visa Platinum credit cards which offer credit limits above $5,000 and between $300 and $4,999, respectively. All of the bank’s credit cards have fraud protection with zero liability (including online purchases), travel accident insurance and overdraft protection if you also have a checking account with Washington Trust Bank.
- Mortgages – the bank has a range of home loan products available including FHA, VA and USDA products for first-time homebuyers as well as refinance products.
Washington Trust Bank Checking Accounts Review
The bank offers customers three options for checking accounts, with the Simplicity Checking being the one account that could be considered a free checking account; if customers opt to receive electronic statements, the $3 monthly charge is refunded. The checking account option that is most comparable to the bank’s main competitors is its Preferred Checking account. This account compares quite favorably to the offerings at Bank of America, Chase Bank and Wells Fargo.
This is mainly due to the fact with Washington Trust Bank’s Preferred Checking account, the monthly fee is lower, the account earns interests and also offers each month, one refund of overdraft fee charges and 2 refunds of ATM fees charged for withdrawals conducted at other bank’s ATMs.
In addition, although the bank still charges its customers overdraft fees, it has a higher threshold than most banks. Customers of the bank won’t be charged an overdraft fee unless their account is overdrawn by more than $7. By comparison Wells Fargo starts charging fees when your account is overdrawn by $5.00 and for Bank of America its $1.00.
